December 7, 2022
Dear Members of the Boston College Community:
In recent weeks, Boston College administrators have become increasingly concerned about the use of e-scooters and other electric transportation devices on campus, especially in regard to the health and personal safety of riders, pedestrians, and building occupants. Many faculty, staff, and students have reported near-collisions and limited access to facilities because of scooters, and recharging lithium batteries in such vehicles has resulted in numerous fires around the United States. Additionally, a number of BC students have suffered injuries from e-scooter falls, and such accidents have caused serious injuries on college campuses across the country.
Therefore, the University has decided to ban electric scooters and other electric transportation devices, such as hoverboards and e-skateboards, from campus, effective December 22, 2022. Specifically, this new policy prohibits the use, storage, and charging of these transportation devices on all Boston College property.
Exceptions to this decision will be made for electric bicycles, provided that users follow all applicable traffic regulations, do not bring their e-bikes into any BC facility, and secure them in outdoor bike racks. Electric mobility aids for individuals with disabilities are also exempted.
Given this new policy, individuals possessing electric scooters, hoverboards, e-skateboards, and similar devices should take them home at Christmas break. Such items found on campus after December 22 will be impounded, and users will be subject to University sanctions.
We ask for understanding and cooperation regarding this decision, and that you join us in helping keep our campus community as safe as possible.
Sincerely,
